The Way Through - A Guide to Psychosynthesis in Everyday Life

I am Jay Ray, also known by my shamanic name of Sparrowhawk. This book has been a long time coming. I think I first mooted the idea of writing it in my third year of Psychosynthesis training in 1987. Then with 20 years of private practice and teaching there was no time to sit and put my experience into word. I set out to write the book based on the years of teaching the course that the manuscript was to come out of. The first draft was finished and an ex-student, knowing that my other love along with Psychosynthesis was Shamanism, suggested that I taught that and from that a 30 week course in shamanism ensued-plus a book to go along with it. I brought that book to birth last August 2008, leaving me with no excuse but to go back and complete "The Way Through". I had thought that my days as a Psychosynthesist were gone, and I believe now that there was some reluctance in finishing the book so as not to let go of my remaining contact with the therapy that I love. But life worked out differently and I find myself back working with people using its elegant mechanisms to stimulate change. So "The Way Through" is a culmination of my observations of what works, using the structure of Psychosynthesis to expand the possibilities of ways of growing our Selves. Indeed it has become a workbook with over 80 experiential exercises, 20 or more diagrams, and lots of ways of viewing life that I believe are beneficial in seeking to change the patterns of the past that continually reach out and trip us up, so ingrained are they in our psyche. It is about the most elegant spiritual psychology yet to be devised, based on my own experience over 25 years of the work of Roberto Assagioli. Rather than being an intellectual discourse of Psychosynthesis, its style offers people a chance to work with the principles in their own time and way. It is based on the course that I developed and taught for many years both in Sydney and in Dunedin. The insights that I gained from on-the-spot experiential work with my students enrich the whole. The techniques offered are ones that I have found work. Maybe not immediately. But over time and with practice, I have seen them transform the lives of many, many people. But it is experiential. That is, its not enough to merely read the book. It requires your participation, as do all good relationships. And that is what I hope it will offer its readers: an opportunity to develop a relationship with Psychosynthesis, leading to a deeper and clearer relationship with themselves. All relationships are subject to change as long as we are willing to take the steps of learning that are available to us, and to use our will to make new choices. This book outlines, step by step, how that is possible. I recommend it to clients, students and teachers of Psychosynthesis alike. Indeed I recommend it to anyone who wishes to become more of who they truly are.
